Geology
Guided geological tours are proposed in the mountains, with special attention to the rocks and the geological process that form the landscape. A little text will be given for each excursion.
From a simple stone, we can go back in geological time from its formation up to present time, and find its position in the Alpine range history.

The observation of landscape from chosen view points will illustrate basic geological concepts. Rock and mineral samples can be collected.

Few proposed excursions:

Walliser Alpes
  • St-Bernard area
  • Good introduction to the metamorpfic rocks, and their context in the Alpine range. Notion of geodynamic and origin of the nappes.
  • Traverse from Moiry to Zinal, through la Lé pass:
  • Contact between the Dent Blanche Austro-Alpine nappe, related to the African continental plate, with the sediments of once present Piedmont ocean, presently disappeared. It is possible to touch a polished fault plan at the continent-ocean contact.
  • Summer Haute route between Chamonix and Zermatt:
  • geological discovery of the high Alpine range with the main summits between Mont Blanc and Matterhorn. Traverse of the main tectonic units of the Swiss Alps.
  • Tour around Mont Blanc:
  • around the Mont Blanc igneous rock massive. Traverse of the granite, a remnant of the old pre-Alpine European continental crust, in contact with the sedimentary cover rocks. This history starts before the Alp formation, in primary era.
  • Tour around Matterhorn:
  • Between Italy and Switzerland, this itinerary leads us in the oceanic crust rocks of the Piedmont ocean, and in the metamorphic rocks of Dent Blanche nappe. We’ll have all the time to decide whether the Matterhorn is African.
Limestone Alpes:
  • Solalex - Anzeindaz - Derborence - Ardon area:
  • Large scale structures resulting from the superposition of the Helvetic nappes. Ideal excursion to exercise binocular geology.
  • Martigny area:
  • Observation of the old basement rocks and sedimentary covers. Special view point from the village of Mex toward the overturned limb of Morcles nappe. This is a classical case of alpine geology.
Jura mountains:
  • Areuse Canyon and Creux du Van or the Jura crest
  • Suchet - Aiguilles de Baulmes - Chasseron
  • To familiarize ourselves with the sedimentary series and deformation in Jura Mountain, and discuss their origin.
